When becoming a freelancer or running a business as an entrepreneur, you have to endure the touch decision whether to run your social media accounts as personal or as a company you feel you represents what you do. Even if you aren’t an freelancer, entrepreneur or don’t run a company, everyone has something that they feel represents whatever they’re passionate about.
Before you can launch your brand, or take your current brand onto social media, you need to decide which direction you want to take; a personal brand or a corporate image. In some cases, you’ll have both. If you ask me, I think you should build a personal brand if you have the opportunity to. Companies fail for reasons they can’t control; people sell or move on to new projects or companies. It’s hard for a company to change it focus if their niche goes out of style. Making such a change will abandon the following that they’ve created if their new focus is totally different from what they used to provide.
One of the major things I like about your own name is that it evolves with you. We all have a lot of different interests and things that we’re used to, and we want to be able to talk about all of them. If you have a personal brand, your followers will be with you, eager to see what you do next. Your personal brand follows you to your next endeavor. That’s why I think going with your name as the brand is the right thing to do. It sticks with you and you don’t have to rebrand if you want to do something different.
For artists, speakers, and celebrities, a personal brand is essential. You’re the brand, and people want to engage with you. Those people who own several businesses also benefit from having a personal brand. Jay-Z is a perfect example of someone who owns a number of businesses but is better known and has a larger following than the individual businesses he owns.
Building a brand takes time whether it’s personal or corporate. You have to earn creating a personal brand around yourself. You can’t just come out of nowhere and be a brand. I’d like to hear what you have to say. Do you feel that a corporate brand is better? Leave comments below and let me know about how you feel.
