When I was a kid, I remember my friends and I wanted buy a Rolex watch when we grew up. We even went as far to by “Folex” watches just so we can stunt on our friends at school.
When I got a little older, I didn’t want a Rolex anymore. I wanted a fancy watch that none of my friends knew about. I moved on to wanting Hublot, Cartier or Omega. But when I got my first Apple Watch in 2015, I haven’t felt the need to buy any of those other fancy, high end watches.
There is a reason that the Apple Watch has the same level of name recognition as the watches I mentioned above. It’s even popular amongst older people in the business world. Rolex has been a symbol of prestige for a minute, but these brands are losing it’s status to younger people who are fully in the digital world and want more out of their products.
WHY APPLE WATCH WINS
Anyone under 50 knows what the Apple Watch is, but not a Hublot watch. But that by alone wouldn’t be enough for Apple to dominate in the mind of consumers.
These luxury watches aren’t accessible. They aren’t meant to purchased by the average person. The cheapest Hublot watch I could find was $3900. A used Hublot watch can cost around $2900. That being said, Hublot, like other luxury brands, are overpriced watches.
Apple sells us an experience that helps us with more than just telling time. The fact that the Apple Watch does much more than luxury watches and doesn’t cost nearly as much gives Apple the upper hand. It’s accessible to the masses, and it is functional and practical.
With the Apple Watch Series 4, you can make phone calls, stream music, track your fitness goals and send texts for $400. If you wanted to go all out, the most expensive Apple Watch is $800, still $1100 cheaper than the cheapest used Hublot watch.
MARKETING TO THE MASSES MATTERS
Apple is awesome at marketing. Their marketing is one of the reasons people are driven to their products. And with that marketing, they have built a lifestyle around their brand. Watches like Rolex that has been around, but you only hear about it on television shows or if your lucky enough to be in the company of rich people. When is the last time you’ve seen a commercial for a luxury brand watch? I haven’t seen one in a while, but as I’m writing this, I’ve saw three Apple Watch commercials.
Apple markets often and it sells us a lifestyle and how their technology can improve our lives. The luxury brands on the other hand only sells us a name. And while we know you have to be at a certain level to afford these watches, they don’t show how they can improve your lifestyle. Its only an expensive timepiece that shows you have money.
Me personally, I’m taking the Apple Watch every time. If you’re an Android user, you should consider the Galaxy Gear watches. I’d rather pay $400 for a watch that syncs up with multiple devices and can add more value to my life than a $3k+ watch that is only a status symbol.
